Mark Stewart

Mark Stewart is one of music’s great innovators. Like most “originators” he’s not known for that at all by the public at large and maybe that’s the way it’s supposed to be. It’s hard to talk about one’s big heroes so without further ado I’ll give you a link to some info about him. He’s done a lot more than described on that page (for instance written a book so obscure i can’t find anything about it on the net, and no, it’s not this though the title could well be his) but it’s good to know there’s at least some decent info to be found.
Anyhoo… here’s a torrent with all his albums: demonoid | torrentspy
It’s quite a big torrent so for the folks who want to know a little bit of how Mark Stewart can sound like; Survivalist is a track from his third album.
In the light of this tune, I’d like to do another Ochcontest. The reaguurder who can detect the most influences/samples/associations considering this track will get a special price…

die bekende basloop van damals uit een van die eerste rapnummers, die herken ik, zij het wat vertraagd en in dit geval ‘geslabt’.. (weet verder niks van rap, dus de naam van het nummer is mij ontschoten).
En die lach uit ‘Fire’ of was dat uit wacko jacko’s thriller? hmpf. Kwait nait meer.
dat schelle geknetter vind ik minder, of ligt dat aan de kwaliteit van de rip?

je bent aardig op weg goodie! ik sta te popelen om een aanvulling te geven maar kan de prijsvraag at this point in time natuurlijk niet gaan verpesten.
tevens moest ik wel ff glimlachen om bebop met z’n “”Survivalist” = broken?” … zo hoort het dus te klinken!
stel je ff voor dat je dit op 120dB live hoort… je wordt letterlijk een zwart gat ingezogen en aan de andere kant weer uitgekotst… ik ken echt niks wat ook maar enigszins bij dit soort power in de buurt komt. maar goed, ben dan ook een fan.

nog wat additionele info om het plaatje kompleet te maken:
de begeleidingsband van M. Stewart alhier, beter bekend als The Maffia a.k.a. Tackhead, speelt dus de door G2S al opgemerkte baslijn van Rappers Delight.
pikant detail in deze is dat dezelfde band indertijd óók de “huisband” van sugarhill records was en dus ook het “origineel” op Rappers Delight speelden. Nou weet ik dat Zumen nog een hoop info heeft over hoe wel of niet origineel die originelen van sugarhill waren (apparently allemaal gejat van vaak nog veel obscuurdere sources) maar daar weet ik zelf weer iets te weinig van en kan daar dus niet verder op ingaan.

your post is excellent as ever, it just really is beyond good and evil” (yep, that’s Mark Stewart’s Pop Group debut that was excellently covered by Ghost Exits).
after posting jewels like King Tubby and Keith LeBlanc this is a fitting climax. but where can you go from here? Keith Hudson maybe? PIL’s Metal Box including all the demo versions? there’s always more.
I was LOL as your co-bloggers seem to be getting restless about broken or bad quality rips. I agree with your reply, the noise is a CRUCIAL. frankly, ever since hearing Mark’s 1987 album I just keep thinking that rips are broken whenever there ISN’T any decent noise in the mix…
your och colleagues deserve to win a molotov cocktail each for guessing THAT bassline and the Beastie Boys “Paul Revere” popping up at the start. it’s the INSTRUMENTAL version of “Paul Revere” by the way.
the bassline that’s just DOMINATING the “Survival” trilogy is a slowed down version of the bassline from “Rapper’s Delight” by Rapper’s Delight, which in turn is a note-for-note copy of the bassline from Chic’s “Good Times”, courtesy of the much missed Bernard Edwards.
is that très chic or what?yes, Doug Wimbish plays the bass on “Survival” and ALSO played the bass on “Rapper’s Delight”,
uncredited as he was part of Sugarhill’s houseband. you might know that Sugarhill was run by Sylvia, who once had a big hit record herself, and Joseph Robinson Snr, who has passed away.
BUT (and this is where the extra points get scored) Doug also played on Melle Mel & Duke Bootee’s “Message II (Survival)”, together with the mighty Keith LeBlanc.
PLEASE try to track down this song - you will not be disappointed! and you’ll notice that on “Survival” Mark Stewart is singing (and twisting) the lyrics of “The Message II”
all this talk about sampling is making me think of stealing.
by the way, did you know that Doug owns the original bass that the Average White Band recorded “Pick Up The Pieces” on? well, now you do.

Heb ik je gemist…. Ik was er ook. De piep zit nog in mijn oren… maar het was een geweldig optreden. Zeker een van de betere, maar dat kan natuurlijk ook komen door het feit dat we zo lang hebben moeten wachten….

mijn oren hebben ook flinke klappen opgelopen. maar ben nog steeds enorm onder de indruk, heb ze niet zo goed meer gezien sinds 88 en misschien was dit zelfs nog beter maar blijft natuurlijk lastig vergelijken.
