London Calling, Majesty!

April 30th, 2006 by JayJay

So, I decided to go to Amsterdam on Koninginnedag, just like everybody else not living in Amsterdam except for Rotterdam probably. Anyways, I dropped by the outdoor stage next to Paradiso to view some real music, avoiding the hundreds of thousands of people dying to see The Opposites and Simon Webbe on the Museumplein. I stayed for two gigs: The Pipettes and Dustin’s Bar Mitzvah.

First up: Lady trio The Pipettes. Polkadotpop in its purest form. Seventies-styled catchy tunes sung by more or less beautiful women. Somebody pinch me please, am I dreaming or did I really walk into a “Grease: the 2006 edition” live performance? It’s silly, it’s dancable, it’s charming, it’s weird, and it’s everything you’d expect from seeing this picture:

Next: The snotty rockers from Dustin’s Bar Mitzvah who want to prove the world that punk is not dead for the gazillionth time. I’m afraid their attempt pretty much failed. Decent, but really more of the same. I had a good time though, they delivered every song with great enthusiasm and they really got in touch with the crowd. And with contact I mean throwing cans of beer, making fun of the audience every two songs, spitting some sentences into the crowd nobody understood because they were drunk too etc. Their biggest effort: playing Total Eclipse Of The Heart. As they said: “You bloody well know Bonnie Tyler!”
