Emir Kusturica - Black Cat, White Cat

Rams’ pots featuring the Fanfare Ciocărlia, a Roma speed-metal brass band travellin’ at a ludicrous speed of 200 bpm, included the album Oh, Danube, Ma Danube! Some things that Rams did not mention is that the Danube is the longest river in the European Union, allegedly, and that the album also features the No Smoking Orchestra, the Belgrade part of Zabranjeno pušenje. The No Smoking Orchestra composed the music for Emir Kusturica’s Crna mačka, beli mačor, this week’s Och’s Weekend Movie, that is situated on the banks of the Danube river. *draws a circle in the air*

Černá kočka, bílej kocour (check for pictures) is a gangstercomedy in Fellini style, partly inspired by the comic Alan Ford, that came out a project Emir first started as a documentary about gipsy musicians. Just a small synopsis:
Zare loves Ida

Matko is a small time hustler, living by the Danube with his 17 year old son Zare. After a failed business deal he owes money to the much more successful gangster Dadan. Dadan has a sister, Afrodita, that he desperately wants to see get married so they strike a deal: Zare is to marry her. But none of the two care much for an arranged marriage: Zare is in love with Ida, Afrodita is waiting for the man of her dreams.

Some things that the revue passeren: one sparkling love story, a flock of geese, another really funny love story, another flock of geese, a group of gangsters hijacking a trainload of gasoline, a pig and his Trabi, the famous Black Obelisk, yet another flock of geese, another group of gangsters making illegal whisky, a jew’s harp, some more geese, un chat noir et un chat blanc (duh), two good friends (Louis, I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship), a pitbull terrier, lots of geese, and a lovely ladybird. Plus, fifty percent of the scenes feature the No Smoking Band, sometimes kind of tied up (and that’s a /seth easter egg).

Pig loves Trabi

Unlike Underground (1995) or Life Is A Miracle (2004), Schwarze Katze, Weisser Kater does not make a statement about the troubles that Yugoslavia has been through the past decades. It’s that kind of love-it-or-hate-it, crazy, out-of-control, chaotic comedy with the weirdest people walking around in it. I suspect the crew probably was ROTFLOL during casting of the actors. Eagerly awaiting Emir’s new documentary though.
