Millionair in Zimbabwe
March 10th, 2008 by freek

At the end of this month elections take place in Zimbabwe. Robert Mugabe (84), since independence in 1980 the only ruler, will do anything to win this elections. And chances are, although the opposition is tougher than ever, he’ll win again. Despite the utter mess Mugabe turned Zimbabwe in.
Life expectancy in Zimbabwe has dramatically declined since 1990. It used to be 60 for a man, now it is only 37, the lowest in the world. Unemployment is at about 80 percent, inflation rate is at a staggering 100.000 percent. One USDollar equals 25 million Zim Dollars.
I visited Zimbabwe in 2001. Even then there were big differences in exchangerates the first week en the second week. And about then Mugabe began throwing white families of of there farms.
Why will he probably win elections? First of all because he is oppressing opposition.
The oppositionleader Morgan Tsvangirai of the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) has been beaten up several times, people are being intimidated to vote for Mugabe’s Zanu PF, only the countries who don’t criticize Mugabe are allowed to observe the elections. And ofcourse Mugabe will tamper with the electionresults.

But there’s another thing. Although Mugabe is responsible for ruining one of the most beautiful countries in this world, for a lot of Zimbabweans he is still the first prime minister of a independent Zimbabwe. And, even in 2001, there were still a lot of white people who looked at the black Zimbabweans as inferior. No wonder Mugabe scores a point when he keeps ‘white countries’ out of the door. Look at the documentary Adriaan van Dis made about the refugees from Zimbabwe in South Africa

And music Frekie? How about Zimbabwean music? Okay, for your listening pleasure: Ndega zvangu, from Zimbabwe’s big star Oliver Mtukudzi.

Schijnbaar een Duits bedrijf dat tonnen verdiend door elke week scheepsladingen nieuw geld te drukken.

Die Duitsers hebben natuurlijk ervaring met hyperinflatie, dus die drukkerij had goede referenties, denk ik.
