Two years after Public Enemy's groundbreaking and militant album "It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back" was released Paris (real name Oscar Jackson) dropped his overwhelming debutalbum "The Devil Made Me Do It" for the second time, this time via Tommy Boy records. Combining the rage of (early) Ice Cube with the social consciousness of Public Enemy, the lyrics were sure to grab the attention of the (then socially aware) HipHop audience. The title song's video was banned from MTV and a legend was born. (Paris hasn't changed a bit as you can see on the site of his own label "Guerrila Funk" where the discussion on black awareness continues till date.)
The sound of the album is dark, grim and ugly with much bass and an emphasis on the lyrics. Combined with some fierce uptempo tracks, guitar samples, live scratching and an angry, very angry Paris. Angry with white America, uncle Tom negroes, Young MC, Kid-n-Play et al.

Ik heb hem ooit live gezien in de paradiso, heel even. Dat was toch echt het allerslechtste concert wat ik ooit heb gezien. Na twintig minuten liep ie weer weg, de drol. Terwijl die plaat zo ontzettend goed is. Dank voor de download.

idd, dank voor de download, gast, ik haal Paris nog regelmatig aan als voorbeeld hoe rap ook kan en waarom het me toen zo gegrepen heeft.
Al is het een beetje nutteloos, jeugd van tegenwoordig kent krs al amper, laat staan een donkere boodschapper als Paris (Hilton? is dan het antwoord, goedver)

"Unanswered Questions" was de eerste film die bij mij en vele anderen de wenkbrouwen omhoog deden gaan over 911. Studenten uit NY die toen bij het WTC in de buurt woonden (en 3 maanden lang uitermate down waren door de rook die in de stad hing, en pas opklaarden toen de smeulende vuren o n d e r alle puin werden gedoofd, waren geschockt door de vragen die hij opwierp). De film was erg goed vormgegeven.
The Devil Made Me Do It was een track op een "Ein abend in Wien"-cd. Dat was een festival waar Nirvana in een klein bovenkamertje een optreden verzorgde. Niet erg druk bezocht. Erg punkig.
Via dat cdtje werd die track van Paris een dikke floorfiller in de plaatselijke ongeevenaarde disco "De Swing", waar de dinsdag, woensdag en zondag altijd lekker doomy was.
Ah, the memories. In De Swing draaiden de DJ's zeer gevarieerd, de muziek was echt een belevenis. Er zijn 2 redenen dat ik niet meer ga stappen: De muziek is overal te eenvormig en het staat te hard.

De download is welbij 114MB blijven steken, ik moest nog een paar millimeter. De tracker doet moeilijk. Precies "the devil made me" is verhakseld.

Vreemd, The Devil made me do it is nu voor 99% compleet, en het nummer daarna, "The hate that hate made" is voor 97.75% compleet. kennelijk mist er een "piece" precies op de grens van deze files.
ik durf het bijna niet te vragen, maar mag nummer 11 ook op de http?
